Wines for the Super Rich

  1. The Montrachet appellation in Burgundy produces the world's finest and costliest dry white wines. Their centuries-old reputation is based on Chardonnay grown in the unique microclimate and soil of these vineyards and vinified according to classic techniques. These wines are monumentally complex and dense, with high levels of alcohol and moderate acidity.
  2. Champagne is the most well known and one of the costliest of the sparkling wines in the world, but there are many other sparkling varieties of exotic wines produced in other countries and regions, that are very good in their own right. For example, there's the excellent Sekt of Germany and the distinguished Cava of Spain. The Spumante of Italy also has a long and distinguished tradition among sparkling wines. The Cap Classique of South Africa is not a very old variety, but some people prefer it to the European brands.
  3. Some of California’s top “red” winemakers, in the opinion of BrianPasch.com:

·         Harlan

·         Abreu

·         Colgin Cellars

·         Bryant Family

·         Dalla Valle

·         Shafer Hillside

·         Screaming Eagle

·         Sine Qua Non

·         Hundred Acre

·         Pride Mountain

Prices for these are in the range of US $ 500 per bottle (2004). Not exactly billionaire stuff, but not for the common man either!

  1. One of the most expensive wine ever sold is a bottle of 1787 Chateau Lafite which sold at Christie’s London in December, 1985 for £105,00. The wine is reported to be from the cellar of Thomas Jefferson, the former US President, and this most expensive bottle of wine had the initials Th.J etched into the glass bottle.
  2. Recently a bottle of wine sold for $90,000.
  3. The world's most expensive icewine has gone on sale, its creators hoping to snare a buyer willing to write a cheque for CAN$30,000 for a half bottle, says this Sep 2006 article from Decanter.com. “Whoever snaps up the rare liquid – only 5 cases of the Chardonnay icewine have been produced – will have to have a fine sense of the absurd as well as deep pockets. Icewine – made from grapes picked at -8C – is among the world's most labour-intensive wines. But with the world's richest people already splashing out on Bordeaux 2005, whose most expensive wine is Chateau Petrus at £20,000 a case, it may be difficult to focus minds on a sweet wine from Ontario.”
  4. Top 10 Most Expensive Wines Listing – from AskMen. This article rates the wine purchase in the mid-'80s by billionaire Malcolm Forbes for $155,000 at auction for a bottle at its top. The bottle was believed to have come from Thomas Jefferson's own collection and dated back to 1787. This was the one that was mentioned earlier as well.
  5. World’s Most Expensive Wines – A Forbes listing
  6. Expensive French wines. To a question, “What is the most expensive wine in France?”, the answer is given by the web site Terroir-France as follows: Pétrus and Romanée Conti are supposedly the most expensive wines in France. A bottle of Petrus cost about $1,000 minimum. Pétrus is a winery located in Pomerol, Bordeaux. Petrus is a red wine. Merlot is the dominant grape…The price of a Romanée Conti bottle is often 2 or 3 times higher than Petrus! Romanée Conti is considered to be one of the best red wines in the world.
  7. Six magnums of Chateau Lafite 1959 Bordeaux were purchased by an anonymous buyer for just over $17,000 in a Sotheby's auction in London in June 2001.
