have web pages hosted free of cost. Acquired by Yahoo
- Google – Started as
a search engine providing superior results, owing to its PageRank
algorithm; by 2006, it had diversified into many other domains, though
still primarily known for its search.
- Hotmail – the most
popular free web-based mail; acquired by Microsoft.
- ICQ – World’s first
instant messenger, launched by an Israeli start-up; acquired by AOL
- AOL – America Online –
an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and an online content provider
- Overture – pioneered
the pay-per-click online ad model, which was later adopted by Google;
acquired by Yahoo
- Del.icio.us – the
pioneering bookmark-sharing site; acquired by Yahoo
- Million
Dollar Home Page – a unique (even if a bit wonky) idea in which the
founder got the idea of selling pixels on his web site’s home page to
companies; he sold it at a dollar per pixel, and reports say he sold a
million pixels on his home page, thus making a million bucks from just
that page.
- eGroups (now Yahoo
Groups) – a platform to build free online communities, especially mailing
lists – acquired by Yahoo
- Monster – one of
the largest online job sites
- Flickr – one of the
most popular photo-sharing sites, acquired by Yahoo
- Dell Online – Dell
Computers pioneered the concept of selling “configure-it-yourself” PCs
online, making it a hugely successful channel for Dell.
