Why did the supersonic Concorde stop flying?

After 27 years in service, the technical wonder that was the Concorde stopped flying in Oct 2003 due to the flagging economy and low passenger numbers.

British Airways said that its decision had been made for commercial reasons with passenger revenue falling steadily against a backdrop of rising maintenance costs for the aircraft.

Air France said similarly that the decision was taken because of "the deterioration of business results from the transatlantic service", the aircraft's only scheduled route

Designed for Mach 2 and over, it made the trans-Atlantic flight in about 3 hours, and had the droop nose that needed to be lowered so that the pilots could see where they were landing, so long and pointy was the nose. It was a plane ahead of it's time.
