Private Jets for the Super Wealthy
Key words: business jets, personal aircraft, corporate jets, private air travel
The flights most of us go by are the so-called scheduled flights. These flights leave at regular intervals with tickets being purchased up to the day of departure by the general public like you and me. On the other hand, a charter flight is usually booked far in advance as part of a private travel package. At the extreme end of air travel are the corporate jets and the private jets. These are aircraft that are owned by an individual or a company and used for their private travel.
There are currently some 219,000 non-commercial airline, non-military airplanes in the U.S., according to the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), a trade organization based in Washington, D.C.
Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich owns a private jet to go along with his trio of yachts. Tom Cruise served sushi to Katie Holmes aboard his private jet on their first date. Of course Oprah Winfrey owns a private jet too.
The prices of private planes can run well into the tens of millions. Corporate-owned aircraft are usually more business-like and utilitarian when it comes to comforts within the aircraft – you can expect simple amenities like solid leather seats, a satellite communications system so executives can stay in touch etc. But there are much more luxurious private jets where features such as surround-sound entertainment systems, exotic cabinetry, gold-plated bathroom fixtures and more can be seen!
While business jets like Gulfstreams and Learjets remain the most well-known private aircraft, there is much more variety - from small single-engine piston aircraft to turboprop machines long revered for business transportation, to intercontinental business jets on the scale of commercial airliners.

The market for such aircraft is quite strong. Worldwide shipments of piston-engine aircraft reached a 20-year peak in 2004, increased to 2,465 new units in 2006, according to GAMA. Turboprop airplane shipments went upto 365 in 2005, and business jets sales were 705 units in 2005.
In the beginning, that is in the early 1920s & 1930s, private planes comprised the Beech Model 17 Staggerwing. The Gulfstream I came along in 1958 (Gulfstream III & Gulfstream IV in later years) manufactured by Grumman as a straight-wing turboprop and priced at $1 million. Along came the Learjet in 1963. Other notables were the 1964 Beech Model 90 King Air, a twin-engine turboprop for the business set, and Burt Rutan's innovative lightweight composite Beech Model 2000 Starship was introduced in 1983. The Beech Model 200 cost a reported 5 million US $. Boeing Business Jet, Cessna Citation X, a midsize business jet.

“What does a billionaire do when having a private jet becomes so affordable that mere millionaires can swing the cost?
He trades up--to a Boeing 747-8, say, or to a Airbus 380--costing $280 million and $300 million, respectively.
Back in 1996, when Boeing introduced the first "personal use" version of one of its commercial airliners, the $30 million Boeing Business Jet (a reconfigured 737) was treated as the last word in spaciousness and luxury. Now, compared with competing luxe lifts, a 737 looks like mashed potatoes.” – so says Forbes in its 2007 article on Private Jets
