Conversion of coal to liquid fuels (specifically diesel)
involves a series of steps. First, coal is heated under pressure with steam
to create a gas termed synthetic gas (or syngas). Next, the undesirable
elements such as sulfur and CO2 are removed from the gas. The gas s then made
to react with a catalyst to form synthetic petroleum, which is finally
refined to make diesel fuel. Coal companies world over, and especially in the
US reckon that coal-based fuel has emerged as a viable alternative and feel
that coal-based fuel should be a part of the mix of alternatives being
considered at present. By way of history, diesel from coal is not exactly
new. The process of deriving diesel oil from coal was used by both Germany
and Japan during the World War II to make up for shortage of imported oil;
South Africa used simlar processes during its isolation period owing to the
apartheid regime.
