(born 22 September 1965) is a
Swiss / Italian businessman and yachtsman.
Born in Rome, Bertarelli is CEO and Deputy Chairman of Serono, a biotechnology
company he inherited from his father. His personal wealth has been estimated
at US$8.8 billion. Serono was sold to Germany's Merck KGaA on Sept. 21, 2006 for US$13.3 billion.
In 2000, he founded the yachting
syndicate Team Alinghi. In 2003, Alinghi won the Louis Vuitton Cup before
going on to win the America's
Cup. Bertarelli served as navigator aboard Alinghi.
He graduated from Babson College and Harvard Business School.
